Electricity generation in Nigeria has soared beyond 4000 mega watts, Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo said on Thursday.
Speaking on Wednesday in Abuja through his Special Assistant on
Media, Kande Daniel, Nebo linked the success with determined efforts of
the government to reduce system collapse and enhance service delivery
all over the country.
He said generation capacity reached 4105.90mw on Tuesday — 985m in
Lagos, the nation’s industrial nerve centre, and 410.80mw in Abuja.
He admitted that generation continued to fluctuate and was 3,795.30
mw as at Wednesday morning, but maintained that the average power
generation stood at 3,800 mw, contrary to insinuations that power had
dropped below 2,000 mw.
Nebo also claimed that since last week, many households have been
enjoying improved electricity supply. He also restated the commitment of
the Federal Government to consolidating on efforts towards further
bolstering power supply.
However, speaking with SaharaReporters, a resident of Ikorodu and
staff of Union Bank Plc, questioned the veracity of Nebo’s claims,
saying power supply to his neighbourhood has remained as epileptic as
ever.
“What is the essence of Nebo’s 4,000mw if it doesn’t translate to
longer hours of electricity than we currently enjoy”? the banker, who
simply identified himself as Chinomso, queried.
Also, a resident of Gbagada in Lagos who spoke anonymously also
called for improved electricity supply rather than the bandying of
figures in the media.
“If you asked me, I’d say it is more important to have electricity in
actual terms than to have lofty statistics all over the press,” she
simply said.
